Program Information

  • Take an "off-the-beaten-trail" journey along medieval streets and through the lush countryside. Visit Ferrara, Foligno, Pesaro and Rome, with day-long excursions to Assisi, Florence, Urbino and Venice.
  • Experience a unique, comprehensive and authentic view of Italian culture, history, music and art.
  • Appreciate intersections between music history and performance as well as art history and practice while visiting important historical sites, intimate performance venues and major museums.
  • Experience musical compositions in their original settings. View frescoes as the artist intended. Sketch impressions of cultural and physical landscapes.
  • Enroll in one or two courses and earn credit for Art History, Music History and/or Drawing.

Investigate Italy's rich heritage in the arts. The program will have a shared focus on the Renaissance and parallel developments across the arts, but will also look at contemporary influences, culture and practice. A mix of lectures, field trips and discussions will enhance learning on-site. Seize the opportunity for in-depth personal research as well as collaboration through interdisciplinary approaches to the course materials and content.

Art History Study three phases of Renaissance art by way of works of art and structures to be seen and visited in person. Explore museums that include works of art dating back to pre-Roman origins, frescoes by the greatest masters of the Early Renaissance, and works of art commissioned by some the most powerful dynasties in Italy.

Music History
Experience venues that directly affected the composition of pieces and their construction to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation to music. Because music only exists in time, it is often difficult to truly appreciate a composition, the acoustics and the historical aspects of its inception. Enjoy the opportunity to be in a space where musical pieces were intended to be performed.

Studio Art
Explore Italy, a country that has inspired visual artists for centuries. Visit examples of classical architecture, Roman influences, master frescoes, commissioned works and palaces of important patrons of the arts. Consider objects in context, places with purpose, and history with the added insights of presence.

Earn 3 or 6 credits in FORS 2595, FA 2595. Enroll in one or two courses and earn credit for Art History (ArtH 4892); Music History (MUxxxx) and/or Drawing (Art 1009/1010; 3xxx; 4xxx). Art 1009 fulfills the Fine Arts Liberal Education requirement.  Courses fulfill the SFA and BA requirement  for majors.

Participants MUST have a passport, valid for at least six months after their return to the United States.
