Program Information

  • Explore historical aspects as they merge with social, cultural and environmental factors to tell their story through the arts offering insight into the beliefs, traditions, politics, and religion of Italy’s communities.
  • Visit historic, scenic and cultural locations, including Rome, Florence and Venice.
  • Study health promotion and disease prevention from a historical perspective with regard to the four factors that affect the health of a community: physical, social and cultural, community organizing, and individual behaviors.
ROME The program begins in the Eternal City of Rome. Rome is a vibrant, pulsating metropolis that you will explore via walking classrooms to discover factors that have historically impacted the health of Romans. Highlights include visiting the Roman Forum, Sistine Chapel, Vatican Museum, Coliseum, Trevi Fountain, Jewish Ghetto, Tiber River, Tiber Island and Piazza Navona.

FLORENCE Florence is Italy’s cultural capital and birthplace of the Renaissance.  With its world-famous Uffizi Gallery, Michelangelo’s David, and scores of other museums, the city is prime for investigating the relationship between health and the visual arts.  Florence also houses one of the oldest pharmacies in the world.  Excursions include travel to a private Tuscan Villa; visit to Siena, home to one of Europe's oldest hospitals, which is now a museum; time in San Gimignano, known as Tuscany’s ‘Medieval Manhattan,’ with 14 of 72 towers remaining; and visit to a sustainable farm overlooking the countryside for a relaxing lunch under the Tuscan sun.

VENICE Venice is known as the magical floating city and is like no other in the world as roads are replaced by waterways, which connect 117 islands.  The course focus will be upon historical aspects that shaped this communities' health, such as the black plague (Lazaretto Nuovo—the Quarantine Island) as well as current environmental issues that threaten Venice’s existence. Visits to Murano (the Island of Glass) and Burano (the most colorful city in Europe) offer opportunities to experience Venetian culture and tradition.  An afternoon free beckons relaxation on Lido Island’s beach.

Furthermore, you will have the option to attend an authentic cooking class in Florence and a gondola ride in Venice.
