Program Information

  • Study health care reform in Europe and how it relates to current discussions in the United States.
  • Stroll along the canals in Amsterdam, visit the Dutch Parliament, and climb the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
  • Tour various health care facilities, including Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Ziekenhuis, which is the Netherlands’ Cancer Institute; Menzis, a nonprofit mutual insurance; and Clinique Alleray-Labrouste in Paris.
  • Discuss health policy with analysts at Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport in the Netherlands and at the Ministry of Health in France.

Study the effects of European reforms in order to facilitate a better understanding of methods that may succeed in the United States, as discussions of reform continue. Examine healthcare provisions, access, costs, mandatory health insurance, quality, reforms, policy development and evaluation.

Learn about the organization of health care institutions and health insurance systems. Reforms across Europe address care organization using regional health agencies, which are responsible for ensuring that the needs of the population are met, coordinating care and serving as a bridge between traditional health care providers, public health and social care.

Prepare to enter the health care market by studying the impact of reform on various health system stakeholders, including the patient perspective. Gain an understanding of health care delivery and reform by speaking directly to health care professionals and residents. Observe how hospitals, clinics and insurers are organized in order to serve patients as well as interact with one another.

Earn 3 credits in FST 4256, INTB 4495 Health Care Systems in the Netherlands and France, which is approved as Category B for Health Care Management majors and an international upper division course.

Course topics include:

  • Globalization of health care, local health care and community systems
  • Political, economic, social and cultural context of the countries’ health care systems’ organization and functioning
  • Basic principles and concepts related to the European health care system reforms
