Program Name: Cross-Cultural Performance Experience in Panama

Early application is strongly encouraged, as space is limited and the program will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Complete applications include an essay and unofficial transcript. A non-refundable application fee of $50 will be billed to your student account upon submission of an online application.

 

Program Information

  • Perform alongside Panamanian students in Panama City and neighboring communities.
  • Observe, discuss and compare approaches to music education, performance and preparation practices with local music students while attending classes at the Universidad de Panama.
  • Visit the Panama Canal and Museum, United Nations Compound and other historical sites.

Rehearse and perform alongside Panamanian students from the Universidad de Panama. After preparing the repertoire, performances will take place in four of the major cities in Panama, including Panama City, El Valle, San Miguelito and Porto Bello. Attend master classes at the Universidad. Learn and teach alongside faculty of the Fundacion Sinfonica Concertante de Panama at selected elementary schools and a music center. Explore the history and culture of Panama through various excursions.

While in Panama City, live in a homestay provided by members of the Universidad de Panama faculty and the Fundacion Sinfonica Concertante de Panama staff. Stay in hotels while traveling to other cities.

Earn 1 credit in FORS 1504, MU 1504Cross-Cultural Performance Experience in Panama.

Course objectives include:

  • Collaborate with others from a different culture toward a unified goal
  • Become familiar with proper terminology necessary to communicate musical ideas
  • Acquire a new level of musical competency and sophistication

Participants MUST have a passport, valid for at least six months after their return to the United States.

A non-refundable application fee of $50 will be billed to your student account upon submission of an online application. A deposit of $400 will be billed to your student account upon your confirmation of participation. The remainder of the program fee will be billed through Student Accounts Receivable.

Financial aid may be applied toward the cost of the program if you are enrolled as a full-time student. There are also study abroad scholarships for University of Minnesota students.

 

Orientation
At least two pre-departure orientations will be held. Pre-departure orientations will include information about financial aid, classwork and travel tips. A general study abroad handbook will be emailed prior to departure.
