UMD Programs in Thailand

The University of Minnesota Duluth offers short-term programs to Thailand. Despite European pressure, Thailand is the only Southeast Asian nation that has never been colonized. This has been ascribed to the long succession of able rulers in the past four centuries who exploited the rivalry and tension between French Indochina and the British Empire. As a result, the country remained a buffer state between parts of Southeast Asia that were colonized. Today, Thailand is both uniquely Thai while simultaneously being greatly influenced by globalization trends.

Students participating in this winter break program in Thailand will explore family and health care in unique contexts such as a rural fishing village, a northern Hmong village, a village-based HIV-AIDS prevention program, a Bangkok slum area, and refugee resettlement efforts. Students will be exposed to traditional Eastern approaches to health and well-being which are deeply rooted in Thai culture, religion and tradition.
