Know the following program information, which you will provide on the online application:

Country: Turkey
Program Name: Art, Design and Visual Culture in Turkey

Program Information
Turkey is an exceptional collision of culture, rich in history, diversity and visual art. Based in Istanbul, this program offers a range of approaches to the visual aspects of the site: architecture, fine art, craft, calligraphy and graphic design.

Students will design projects that focus on an area of interest and lead to a demonstrated understanding through artistic production, visual analysis, critical review, historical comparisons or creative writing.

Students will visit the Haghia Sophia Museum and Blue Mosque, explore ancient trade routes and regal palaces along the Bosphorus River by boat, tour Topkapi Palace and Museum, and experience colorful, vibrant marketplaces such as the Spice Market and the Grand Bazaar. Guided excursions include the archaeological digs of Troy, the spectacular complex of ruins at Ephesus, and the unique ceramics workshops of Iznik.

Location Information
Turkey is a democratic, secular, constitutional republic with an ancient cultural heritage. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited regions in the world. Turkey has a very diverse culture that is a blend of various elements of the Oğuz Turkic, Anatolian, Ottoman and Western culture and traditions.

The program will be based in Istanbul, which is the largest city in Turkey, with a population of 13 million. The history of Istanbul begins around 660 BC. It is primarily known for its Byzantine and Ottoman architecture, but its buildings reflect the various peoples and empires that have ruled its predecessors.

Excursions include visits to Troy, Ephesus and Iznik. Troy was a city, both factual and legendary, best known for being the focus of the Trojan War. The archaeological site of Troy was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1998.

The ruins of Ephesus are an international and local tourist attraction. The city is famed for the Temple of Artemis, which was completed around 550 BC, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Only an estimated 15% has been excavated. The ruins that are visible give an idea of the city's original splendor.

Iznik lies at the eastern end of Lake İznik. The city is surrounded on all sides by three miles of walls about 33 feet high. Iznik pottery is highly decorated ceramics whose heyday was the late sixteenth century. Iznik tiles may be seen in quantity in the imperial and religious buildings of Istanbul.
