Program Information
Turkey is an exceptional collision of cultures, rich in history, diversity and visual art. This program offers a range of approaches to the visual aspects of the site: architecture, fine art, craft (ceramic tile and weaving), calligraphy, graphic design, and more. Students are free to design projects that focus on an area of interest and lead to a demonstrated understanding of their chosen topic through artistic production, visual analysis, critical review, historical comparisons, creative writing or other approaches that seem appropriate to the site and scope of the program and the areas of expertise offered by the faculty.
Students will visit several Mosques, such as the Hagia Sophia and the famed Blue Mosque, explore ancient trade routes and regal palaces along the Bosporus River by boat, and visit Museums of Art and History including Topkapi Palace/Museum and a range of colorful and vibrant marketplaces such as the Spice Market and the legendary Grand Bazaar. Additionally, a guided trip of several days in length will allow visits to the archaeological digs of Troy, the spectacular complex of ruins at biblical Ephesus and the unique ceramics workshops of Iznik with additional stops in between.
Two UMD faculty members, Robert Repinski and Mariana Waisman, will lead this study group.

Location Information
Known officially as the Republic of Turkey, Turkey is a Eurasian country that stretches across the Anatolian peninsula in western Asia and Thrace in the Balkan region of southeastern Europe. Turkey is bordered by eight countries: Bulgaria to the northwest; Greece to the west; Georgia to the northeast; Armenia, Azerbaijan and Iran to the east; and Iraq and Syria to the southeast. The Mediterranean Sea and Cyprus are to the south; the Aegean Sea and Archipelago are to the west; and the Black Sea is to the north. Separating Anatolia and Thrace are the Sea of Marmara and the Turkish Straits (the Bosporus and the Dardanelles), which are commonly reckoned to delineate the border between Asia and Europe, thereby making Turkey transcontinental.
Due to its strategic location astride two continents, Turkey's culture has a unique blend of Eastern and Western tradition. A powerful regional presence in the Eurasian landmass with strong historic, cultural and economic influence in the area between Europe in the west and Central Asia in the east, Russia in the north and the Middle East in the south, Turkey has come to acquire increasing strategic significance.
