Program Information
Study business and economics in China on this introductory program. Learn skills and gain an understanding of the social, cultural, economic and political factors of doing business in China. Acquire fundamental knowledge on how to collaborate with Chinese in order to understand the challenges and critical success factors of doing business from a global perspective.

Explore the capital city of Beijing for several days, learning about Chinese history and culture. Visit the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Summer Palace and many other cultural and historic sites such as the Olympics stadiums.

Stay in dormitories in Tianjin, where the program is based. Nankai University will host business and economics classes. Engage in lectures, team projects and participate in field trips to local businesses and Special Economic Development Zones.

Spend a day trip to the city of Suzhou, the ‘Venice in the East.’ Go to Hangzhou for a second day trip, one of the most renowned and prosperous cities in China for much of the last 1,000 years, due in part to its beautiful natural scenery.

Finally, take a train to Shanghai to see the Bund, Shanghai Museum, Jade Buddha Temple, Oriental Pearl Tower and Garden of Contentment before flying back to Minnesota.

 

Location Information
China has a population of over 1.3 billion people, making it the most populous country in the world. China's economy is rapidly growing and ranks among the largest in the world in terms of economy, purchasing power parity and exports-imports. 

Beijing, the capital of China, serves as the nation’s political, educational and cultural center.

Tianjin is divided into the old city and the Binhai new area. As of 2010, 285 Fortune Global 500 companies have established branch offices in Binhai. It is a base of China's advanced industry, finances, and innovation. 

Shanghai, the largest city in China, lies on the Yangtze River Delta and has one of the world's busiest ports. It is a highly modern city serving as an important cultural, economic, commercial, industrial and communication center.

 

Courses Available
FST 4225, IntB 4201 Chinese Business and Economy (3 credits).

Participants will also learn about Chinese culture through field trips and guided city tours.

 

Eligibility
Students should be in good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 2.5.

Participants MUST have a passport, valid for at least six months after their return to the United States.

 

Costs
A non-refundable application fee of $50 will be billed to your student account upon submission of an online application. A deposit of $400 will be billed to your student account upon your confirmation of participation. The remainder of the program fee will be billed through Student Accounts Receivable. Financial aid may be applied toward the cost of the program if you are enrolled as a full-time student (six credits is full-time for May/Summer). There are several study abroad scholarships for University of Minnesota students.

Fluctuating currency exchange rates may increase or decrease the cost of your international experience.

 

Deadlines & Dates
The application deadline is February 20, 2012.

Early application is strongly encouraged, as space is limited and the class will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Program dates are from May 13 - June 9, 2012.

 

Orientation
At least two pre-departure orientations will be held. Pre-departure orientations will include information about financial aid, classwork and travel tips. A general study abroad handbook will be emailed prior to departure.

 

Housing
Housing facilities for students at the various locations are arranged by the program.

Review the suggested steps to studying abroad. Familiarize yourself on financing, health and safety and other important information to consider when choosing to study abroad. When you are ready to apply, complete the online application and upload the required accompanying materials (unofficial transcript and essay). A non-refundable application fee of $50 will be billed to your student account upon submission of an online application.
