Program Name: Business and Economics in China

Early application is strongly encouraged, as space is limited and the program will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Complete applications include an essay and unofficial transcript. A non-refundable application fee of $50 will be billed to your student account upon submission of an online application.

 

Program Information

  • Discover the social, cultural, political and economic factors of doing business in China.
  • Acquire knowledge and skills to understand the challenges and successes of collaborating internationally.
  • Study alongside Chinese students for a unique cross-cultural partnership.
  • Visit large corporations and local businesses to learn first-hand how to conduct business in China.

Explore the capital city of Beijing for several days while becoming oriented to life in China. Learn about Chinese history and culture by visiting sites such as the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Summer Palace and the Olympics stadiums.

Study and live on campus at Nankai University in Tianjin. Engage in lectures, collaborate on team projects and participate in field trips to local businesses and Special Economic Development Zones. Tianjin is the base of China's advanced industry, finances, and innovation. Many Fortune Global 500 companies have branch offices in Binhai, which is the new area of the city.

Spend a day in the city of Suzhou, the ‘Venice in the East.’ Go to Hangzhou for a second day trip, one of the most renowned and prosperous cities in China for much of the last 1,000 years, due in part to its beautiful natural scenery. Finally, take a train to Shanghai to see the Bund, Shanghai Museum, Jade Buddha Temple, Oriental Pearl Tower and Garden of Contentment before flying back to Minnesota.

Earn 3 credits in FST 4225, IntB 4201 Chinese Business and Economy, which is approved for:

    • Category B elective for Organizational Management, Marketing, and Management Information Systems, and Human Resources majors
    • Category C elective for Finance majors
    • Upper division international elective
    • Upper division elective for Accounting and Economics majors
    • Graduate elective for MBA students

Participants MUST have a passport, valid for at least six months after their return to the United States.

 

Costs
Estimated program costs can be found here.

A non-refundable application fee of $50 will be billed to your student account upon submission of an online application. A deposit of $400 will be billed to your student account upon your confirmation of participation. The remainder of the program fee will be billed through Student Accounts Receivable.

Financial aid may be applied toward the cost of the program if you are enrolled as a full-time student. There are also study abroad scholarships for University of Minnesota students.

 

Orientation
At least two pre-departure orientations will be held. Pre-departure orientations will include information about financial aid, classwork and travel tips. A general study abroad handbook will be emailed prior to departure.
