Study in England Programme Faculty Application

Program Description

UMD’s Study in England Program is a multi-faceted study abroad program that will celebrate it's 30th year with the 2009-2010 program.

Each year UMD sends about 45 students, 4 semester faculty, and 1 Director to Birmingham, England. The program office, faculty offices and classrooms are located in the Alan Geale House on the Selly Oak campus of the University of Birmingham. All students take courses offered by UMD professors and by contract British/European professors who are hired by the program. Some students, when scheduling permits, are able to take classes with British and International students at the University of Birmingham.

The Selly Oak campus is located on Weoley Park Road, about one mile south of the flagship University of Birmingham campus, three miles south of Birmingham city center, and a little over a mile from the flats where our UMD faculty live while in residence. The program office is conveniently located near library, athletic, and shopping facilities.

Faculty Benefits

Aside from reaping the many rewards that come from working closely with students who are learning to make their way in a global world, there are many distinct advantages to participating in the Study in England Program.

The faculty flats are conveniently located a few blocks from the University of Birmingham, main campus and bus line taking you to the city centre and the program office on the Selly Oak campus of the University of Birmingham. There is a ten mile green way and bicycle trail called the Rea Valley Millennium Route, just two blocks down the hill from the flats and it starts at Cannon Hill Park, a 250-acre park including the Rea River and several ponds.
  • UMD will continue to pay the program faculty’s salary and fringe benefits
