UMD Programs in Poland

The University of Minnesota Duluth offers short-term programs to Poland. Poland is a central European country of over 38 million inhabitants. The territory that falls under the name of Poland has shifted greatly over hundreds of years, ranging from encompassing a large area of Europe and Russia to becoming partioned or occupied in power claims and conflict. Poland of today is informally known as the "Third Republic" after the revolutions that swept central and eastern Europe in 1989. In 2004, Poland joined the European Union.

A general microbiology course is offered at University of Wrocław, open to students of biology, cell biology and pre-professional students (pre-med, pre-dent, pre-pharmacy, pre-optometry, pre-vet, etc.). Students will also receive an introduction to Polish language, culture and history and participate in three field trips (medical microbiology laboratory, water treatment facility and laboratory, and a food processing facility). The final weekend is spent in the historical and cultural city of Krakow and its surroundings. Three free weekends also allow students to arrange travel to visit other desired locations.

Participants will encounter pre-war Jewish life, which flourished in Central and Eastern Europe. They will visit sites of historical significance for the Holocaust in Germany and Poland.
