Dynamics and Mechanisms of UV-Damaged DNA Repair by Photolyases

Speaker: Dr. Dongping Zhong
Robert Smith Professor of Physics, Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio
Time/Place:
Thursday, September 20, 2012; 3:00 PM / 130 SMed
Host: Ahmed Heikal (aaheikal@d.umn.edu; x7036)

Abstract: Ultraviolet irradiation causes DNA damages and leads to genome mutation and potential skin cancer. However, such damage can be restored completely by the natural photolyase enzyme in the presence of blue light. Using femtosecond spectroscopy and molecular biology, I will discuss our real-time studies of the complete repairing processes at the most fundamental level of the repair photocycle while elucidating the molecular underpinning of such efficient repair mechanism.
