Financial Aid

The University of Minnesota has two merit-based financial aid programs that make UMD more affordable for high-achieving international students.

  • Tuition Scholarship – One or two full tuition scholarships are awarded annually. The scholarships waive tuition only. Recipients are responsible for student service fees, computer fees, books, medical insurance and living expenses. The award is based on academic achievement, not financial need.

Recipients remain on scholarship during the four years of undergraduate study, provided they maintain a full course load and are in good academic standing.

Once admitted, students with excellent academic records are automatically considered for the scholarship. Awards are made in March for the following academic year.

The estimated annual cost of attendance for scholarship recipients is $10,500 for the academic year.
  • Partial Tuition Scholarship – UMD welcomes international students by offering them an in-state tuition scholarship. Recipients pay Minnesota resident tuition rather than non-resident tuition. To qualify for the tuition waiver, applicants must show evidence of exceptional academic achievement. New transfer students must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The tuition waiver is renewable if the student remains in good academic standing and is making normal progress in a degree program.

The estimated annual cost of attendance for recipients of the partial tuition scholarship is $19,500.
