U.S. Income Tax Forms

If you are a nonresident alien student in the United States you are required to complete and submit tax forms, or “file a tax return”, regardless of your income.

The forms you are required to file:

  1. Form 1040NR-EZ, U.S. Income Tax Return for Certain Nonresident Aliens with No Dependents OR Form 1040NR, U.S. Nonresident Alien Income Tax Return
  2. Form 8843, Statement for Exempt Individuals and Individuals with a Medical Condition (required of all F-1 students).

Forms and instructions can be found at: www.irs.gov.

Students who have been employed on and/or off campus will receive a form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement, from each employer. The forms will be sent to your mailing address. The W-2 form is required in order to complete tax forms. Scholarship recipients may receive a form 1042-S, Foreign Person’s U.S. Source Income Subject to Withholding. The form 1042-S is required for completing tax forms for scholarship recipients.

Assistance with Tax Forms

The International Student Services Office provides assistance with preparing tax forms. Workshops are held weekly from mid February through mid April. There is a $6 charge for the workshop to help cover the cost of the software used for completing tax forms. The schedule for tax workshops is sent to students via e-mail in January.

The due date for filing tax forms is April 15. The Form 1040NR or Form 1040NR-EZ and form 8843 must be sent to the Internal Revenue Service Center, Philadelphia, PA 19255.
