Creating Local Mailboxes with Mulberry

Some Mulberry users find they have saved mailboxes (usually large ones) that they don't want to delete but would rather not store in the Mail directory of their account due to file storage costs. Mulberry 2.1.2 or later can create a "local" storage area for mailboxes on your computer's hard disk (usually in the Mulberry folder) where you can store older or large mailboxes.

Keep in mind that mailboxes stored on your account are automatically backed up by ITSS and are also protected from others accessing them without your password. We recommend you back up mailboxes you save to your hard disk by periodically copying your Mulberry folder to a CD or ZIP disk.

Create a local mailbox storage area

  1. Choose Preferences from the File menu (or from the Mulberry menu in OSX) and then switch to "Advanced" preferences.

  2. Select the "Accounts" tab then click on the "Account: " pop-up menu and select "New".

  3. In the Create New Account dialog box choose "Local Mailbox" from the "Account Type" pop-up menu.

  4. Enter a name for your local mailbox area. In this example we've chosen to call this "Local Mailboxes".

  5. Click the "OK" button to save your preferences.

  6. Your Servers window should now list your new local mailbox storage area beneath your other saved mailboxes.

Create a new local mailbox

Once you've created a local mailbox storage area you can create new mailboxes in this area. You can also copy previous mailboxes into your local storage area, but you'll find it easier to do so once you've created at least one new local mailbox.

  1. Click once on your local mailbox storage area heading to select it.

  2. Click the "Create" button at the top of the window.

  3. Make sure that this dialog box indicates your local mailbox storage area in the "in Account:" field at the bottom of this box.
Enter a name for your mailbox and click OK.

  4. Your new mailbox should appear in your local mailbox area.

Copying existing mailboxes to your local mailbox storage area

  1. Select the mailbox you want to move and drag it next to an existing mailbox in your local storage area. This may work better if you've already created at least one mailbox in your local storage area. Let go of the mouse button when a line appears under a local mailbox name.

  2. You now have two copies of your mailbox - one on your email account and one in your local mailbox storage area in the Mulberry folder on your hard disk.

  3. Once you've confirmed that the mailbox you copied to your local mailbox storage area contains all your messages you can delete the original mailbox from your email account. Click on the mailbox name to select it and choose "Delete" from the Mailboxes menu. You'll be asked if you really want to delete the mailbox.

Remember that to avoid losing your local mailboxes due to hard drive failure be sure to periodically copy the folder containing your local mailboxes to a CD or ZIP drive (backing it up to your account on the Novell server would also work but would negate any file storage charge savings). The "Default Location" that Mulberry will use for your local mailbox storage area is in your Mulberry application folder if you're using Windows or OS9, or /Users/youraccountname/Documents/Local Mailboxes if you're using OSX.
