Example Course Page

This example course page demonstrates many of the faculty web services that we have developed and made available at UMD, and you may download this Dreamweaver template for use in your courses.

Most of these services are tied to the class email aliases, which can be requested at: https://www.d.umn.edu/itss/acctmgr/calias/index.html

The page itself is an example of the course template available for general use in supporting classes with web-based materials.

This template pulls together many of the services you can use for your classes. It is customizable, allowing you to choose the items that will enhance your class.

Available services

Blogs

The twin cities library has a blog account available for faculty, staff, and student use. Please be aware that these are public blogs.

Drop Box

You can have your students submit materials electronically for grading to a central, secure area. This may help you manage your class by:

Exams/Surveys/Evaluations/Reviews

You can have students take exams, surveys and evaluations online. You can also create practice tests or review exercises that students could use online. The program we offer via site license is Test Pilot.

Forum/Web Discussion

This service is known by a variety of names: asynchronous chat, threaded discussion, web chat, bulletin boards, etc. It is a way for students and faculty to leave messages for each other in a shareable fashion. The product we license for the campus is Web Crossing.

Gradebook and grade posting

To help in managing your grades and conveying in progress grade reports to your students, we have two options:

Portfolio

You may want to encourage or require students to keep examples of work in their UMD online Portfolio for reflective growth. This is also useful for academic programs where students need to demonstrate proficiencies for graduation or accreditation.

Password Protected Folders

There may be times when you want to restrict access to a course folder in your web site to only those students enrolled in the course. In these cases, we can create a password protected directory in your web account where you may store these readings.

Your students would then click on a link in your web page to access the folder, supplying their Internet ID and password on an encrypted connection.

Web Conferencing

UMN has a Breeze server available for Web conferencing. Participants may use either a Mac or Windows PC.

A Course Management System: WebCT/Vista

UMN has a multi-campus license for a course management system that pulls many tools similar to these into a single program: WebCT.

This allows you and your students to use a single entry point for your class with one-login convenience.
