Borrowing a Laptop (no charge)
ITSS has long made laptop computers available for classroom use and for conference presentations off campus. We will continue to loan laptops for these purposes, free of charge according to the following:
- UMD faculty, staff and students can use laptops and cart projectors for on-campus classroom presentations. Reservations are limited to same-day within AV hours of operation.
- UMD faculty and staff may borrow laptops off campus and overnight only if they are presenting at a conference (not merely attending).
- Faculty and staff cannot borrow a laptop to just replace their desktop computer (however, rental is appropriate for this purpose).
- Users may be barred from loan if they do not follow agreement form provisions or provide false information.
Renting a Laptop
In the past we received many requests for laptops that did not fit within our loan policies. Often, a department would like a temporary machine for a new employee who is waiting for their laptop or a current employee who needs the mobility of a laptop. Also, faculty, staff, and students may need a laptop for personal reasons. In order to accommodate these needs, ITSS will have laptops available for rental according to the following:
- Currently enrolled UMD students, faculty and staff are eligible to rent laptops.
- Students can only rent one laptop at a time.
- Users may be barred from rental if they do not follow agreement form provisions or provide false information.
- Rental fees (including applicable taxes) will be billed via CUFS, or prepaid at the UMD bookstore. If a CUFS payment is not appropriate or possible, a bookstore receipt should be presented at AV as a rental voucher.
- Late returns will result in additional rental fees, as appropriate, plus a $20 late fee. Fees will be assessed to a student's account as described in the signed agreement form, or billed to faculty and staff as per regular ITSS billing procedures.
