SRS: Acquiring Your Student / Clicker ID Participant Files via WebDrop
Note: These instructions are for using WebDrop to acquire your participant lists. If you are using WebVista follow the TurningPoint
and WebVista instructions instead.
- Go to the WebDrop URL: https://webdrop.d.umn.edu/
- Open the appropriate course folder and choose: "Download Student Response System ID File"
- Right Click the "Right Click Here" link and choose "Save Link As..."
- Name your file and make sure you know where you saved it.
- Launch Microsoft Excel.
- In Excel, Choose "File / Open"
- In the "Open" window, change the "files of type" pull-down list (bottom center of dialogue box) change the file type to "all files."
- Open the webdrop txt file you had just saved from webdrop. Excel will start a "text import wizard." It will default to open as a Delimited file. Click "NEXT."
- It will default to check the "Tab" box. Click "NEXT."
- In the "Column Data Format" screen, select the third column (clicker IDs) and change it from "general" to "text." Click "FINISH." Finally, copy the populated cells by dragging your mouse over them, right clicking, and selecting "copy from the menu." Make sure you only get columns "A-D" even though part of the email addresses may appear to be spilling over into column "E."
- Make sure your TurningPoint Receiver is plugged into the laptop. Leave Excel open with this file and now launch TurningPoint.
- Choose "Participants / Participant List Wizard" from the Turningpoint button bar.
- Name the list something that will make sense to you later (especially if you have multiple sections and / or will teach multiple semesters). Something like: "HLTH100-101-Fall2006."
- Click Next through the next few screens, accepting default choices all through, until you can choose "FINISH."
- You should now see a grid with "Auto" running down the first two columns. The next four columns will be "Last name, First name, Device ID, Student ID."
- Copy the contents of the spreadsheet you made earlier in these directions into the new participant list you just created by selecting the top cell under "Last Name," right clicking, and selecting "paste" from the menu.
- Click "Done." You now have the participant list and you can select it from the TurningPoint pull-down list at the far right, next to the "participants" button. You would generally select this just before class to load the appropriate class list and limit the session to those clickers and students, then reset the session and start the slide show.
