Guest Network Access
Guests to the University campus often wish to access the network for business or personal use. For security reasons, all network access (wired or wireless) at UMD requires the user to authenticate with a user name and password. For University students, faculty and staff, this is their Internet ID and password.
Guests that do not have a University Internet ID have a number of options available for network access, based on their location.
Wireless network on campus
Authenticated wireless (802.11b or 802.11g) networking is available throughout most of the UMD main campus, excluding the residence halls and apartments. Wireless access is available to students, faculty and staff by opening a web browser and authenticating with your University Internet ID and password
For those without a University Internet ID and password, there are several options for short-term guest wireless access. Charges apply for some types of wireless access.
- Short-Term Sponsored Wireless Account
- University staff and faculty can request short term wireless access for University guests and visiting associates by “sponsoring” them. If you have questions about the definition of an official guest, please seek the advice of the Human Resources consultant in your department.
- Short-term guest accounts expire at midnight four days after the effective date that you select. The sponsor receives an e-mail confirmation of the account activation shortly after the request is submitted. This confirmation includes the Internet ID and password that the guest can use to access the wireless network.
- Cost: No cost
- Signing up: Sponsor an official guest

- Conference Wireless Account
- Wireless accounts can be requested in batches for conferences that are being held on campus. Each non-University conference attendee is assigned a unique ID and password to access the wireless network. An effective date and expiration date are set at the time the request is made. Account IDs, passwords, and further instructions are sent to the submitter and listed contacts.
- Academic Departments, Venues (such as Coffman Memorial Union, St. Paul Student Center, Continuing Education Conference Center, HHH Conference Center, and others) and Conference & Event Services can order wireless accounts for conference groups. Conference and meeting planners from outside the University should contact Conference & Event Services at uces@umn.edu or (612) 625-9090 a minimum of ten business days prior to the conference.
- Cost: $10 per account per month, payable by CUFs
- Signing up: Request a Conference Guest Account
- Purchased Wireless Account
- Individuals with no affiliation to the University may purchase access to the University's wireless network using a credit card. A unique ID and password is assigned to the user for the remainder of the day with the option of adding up to five additional days of access. Access expires at midnight.
- Cost:
- Remainder of today until midnight: $5
- 1 day plus the remainder of today: $10
- 2 days plus the remainder of today: $15
- 3 days plus the remainder of today: $20
