Setting up email
Once you have installed the wireless networking card and drivers, you can
use your iPAQ to send and receive email. All iPAQs come with a program called
Inbox, which you can configure to access your UMD email account.
The instructions below detail configuration settings for the two operating
systems used on the iPAQs. The newest version is Pocket PC 2002,
and the other version is just Pocket PC.
CSE Students: Your iPAQ will come with the Inbox preconfigured. To
use email, you will need to change the username from GUEST to your UMD Internet/Email
username as instructed below:
Configure the Inbox for Pocket PC 2002
- Make sure you are within range of a wireless
access point.
- Select START - Inbox.
- Select Tools - Options - New.
- Complete the E-mail Setup (1 / 5) screen:
- E-mail address: enter your UMD email address (example: jdoe0004@d.umn.edu).
- Tap Next.
- Complete the E-mail Setup (2 / 5) screen:
- This page is entitled Auto Configuration. Under the Status: box it should
say "completed".
- Tap Next.
- Complete the E-mail Setup (3 / 5) screen:
- Your Name: Enter your name (example: John Doe).
- User Name: enter your UMD email username (example: jdoe0004).
- Leave the Password field blank.
- Tap Next.
- Complete the E-mail Setup (4/ 5) screen:
- The first window here says POP3. This is not the proper setting,
so tap the dropdown arrow and select IMAP4.
- The second window also says POP3, so highlight it then use the
keyboard to type IMAP4.
- Tap Next.
- Complete the E-mail Setup (5 / 5) screen:
- The Incoming Mail field should be set to "imap.d.umn.edu"
- The Outgoing Mail field should be set to "smtp.d.umn.edu"
- Leave the Domain field blank.
- Tap Finish. Then tap OK in the upper right hand corner of
the screen.
Configure the Inbox for Pocket PC
- Make sure you are within range of a wireless
access point.
- Select START - Inbox.
- Select Services - New Service....
- Complete the Service Name screen:
- Service type: IMAP4 Mail
- Service name: UMD email
- Tap Next.
- Complete the IMAP4 Service (1 of 4) screen:
- Connection: Select Network Connection
- Server: imap.d.umn.edu
- User ID: your UMD Internet/email username (for ex: jdoe0004)
(CSE Students: replace "guest" with your username)
- Password: your UMD Internet/email password
- Tap Next.
- Complete the IMAP4 Service (2 of 4) screen:
- Domain: d.umn.edu
- SMTP host for sending mail: smtp.d.umn.edu
- Return address: your full UMD Internet/email username (for ex: jdoe0004@d.umn.edu)
- Tap Next.
- Complete the IMAP4 Service (3 of 4) screen:
- Customize as you prefer (defaults are OK).
- Tap Next.
- Complete the IMAP4 Service (4 of 4) screen:
- Customize as you prefer (defaults are OK).
- Tap Finish.
Access your email (both operating systems)
- Log on to the wireless network (see Step
4: Log in to the wireless network for details).
- Select Start - Inbox.
- Select Services - Connect.
- When prompted, type in your UMD Internet/email password, then select Go.
- When you are finished reading your email, log off the wireless network (see
Step 4: Log off the wireless network
for details).
