Setting up wireless networking
Limited wireless networking will be available on the UMD campus for Spring
2004. You can configure your iPAQ to access the wireless network, allowing you
to browse the web or check your UMD email.
To use your iPAQ on UMD's wireless network, you will need:
- UMD Internet/email username and password
- iPAQ and cradle or cable
- iPAQ PCMCIA Expansion Pack
- Compaq WL100 Wireless PC Card and driver CD
- Desktop or laptop computer (for syncing)
- Microsoft ActiveSync software (on CD that comes with iPAQ)
- Proximity to an ITSS wireless
access point. Please note that the current
ITSS policy does not allow individuals to place personal hubs of any kind
(wired or wireless) on the UMD network.
CSE students: Your iPAQ will come preconfigured for wireless
networking (steps 1 - 3) - you may skip to Step 4: Log on to the network.
Step 1: Install ActiveSync
ActiveSync is installed on your desktop or laptop computer and creates a partnership between your computer and your iPAQ. It is the program that allows you to transfer information between your iPAQ and your personal computer.
Do not connect the iPAQ device or cradle to the
USB port on your computer until you have successfully installed the
ActiveSync software. If you connect the iPAQ before the ActiveSync
software is installed, the USB configuration on your desktop computer
will not be set up correctly and the iPAQ syncing will not work properly.
If you have installed the ActiveSync software improperly or are having
problems syncing, check this web site for instructions on how to
restore the correct USB device settings: Lilla's USB fix
To install ActiveSync and create a partnership:
- Insert the ActiveSync CD (shipped with the iPAQ) in your laptop or desktop computer.
- Follow the onscreen prompts. When the "Create a Partnership" window is displayed, plug your iPAQ and cradle into the USB port on your computer and complete the installation.
When you have successfully installed the ActiveSync software, the following screen will be displayed.
For detailed instructions on how to complete this step, refer to your iPAQ owner's manual.
Step 2: Install the Compaq WL100 PC card and drivers
- If inserted, remove the Compaq WL100 card from the PC
expansion jacket on your iPAQ.
- Connect your iPAQ to your desktop PC using either the cradle or cable. An ActiveSync window will open and your iPAQ will synchronize with your desktop PC. Wait until ActiveSync has successfully connected.
- Using Windows Explorer, locate the setup30.exe file on the CD that came with the Compaq wireless card.
- Double-click on the file setup30.exe and follow the on-screen instructions to install the Windows CE drivers on both your local computer and the iPAQ:
- On the initial WL100 Welcome screen, click Finish.
- On the Compaq WL100 Wireless LAN window, click Next, then Yes to accept the license agreement.
- An Add/Remove Programs windows will pop up, followed by Retrieving Device Data, indicating that the drivers are being downloaded to the iPAQ.
- On the Installing Applications window, click Yes to accept the default location.
- On the Application Downloading Complete window, click OK.
- When the installation is complete, click on Finish.
Step 3: Configure the iPAQ networking
If the drivers were installed successfully, your iPAQ should be displaying the WL100 Settings screen.
- For Profile, select Default. Click OK to close.
- Select START - Settings - Connections - Network
- In the Adapters Installed list, select the Compaq WL100 Wireless LAN PC Card.
- On the IP Address tab, select User server-assigned IP address
- On the Name Servers tab, for DNS name server enter: 131.212.32.32
Click OK to save the changes, OK again (to close the message about "The next time the adapter is used..."), and OK one last time (to close the Settings windows).
- To ensure that the new drivers allow your Pocket PC to enter Sleep Mode while the WL100 is inserted, remove the iPAQ from the cradle and perform a normal reset of your device (use the stylus to press the reset button at the bottom right side of your iPAQ Pocket PC - see your iPAQ owner's manual for details).
Step 4: Start wireless network access
- Make sure you are within range of a wireless
access point.
- Insert the Compaq WL100 Wireless LAN PC card into the slot on the iPAQ expansion
pack. Insert your iPAQ into the expansion jacket.
- Select START - Programs - WL100 Status Icon. Select the Link
tab at the bottom.
- Select Rescan. When you have a live network connection, the State
window will display "Associated" and a number. Check Link Quality and
Signal Strength for additional information.
