Dial-up (modem) Access

UMD supports a modem pool that provides dial-in access to the UMD network for all students, faculty and staff. Once connected, users can access most of the same services that available from on campus, such as email, Internet access, Library resources and Samba services. Some services, such as Novell Office Server access, are limited over a dial-up connection.

What do I need?

A minimum of 14.4k modem is suggested for connecting to UMDNet. Some older 56K modems may have problems connecting to our modem pool.

You will also need to know your UMD Internet ID username and password.

What does it cost?

Access to the modem pool is free for the first 100 hours of usage each month. Usage above 100 hours will be charged directly to the user at the rate of $4 per each 10-hour increment. For details on the modem access fee and payment options, see: Modem Access Fee

You can check your current monthly modem usage at any time by accessing your Central System Usage Reports.

There is a four-hour limit on each call, after which time the call will be automatically disconnected.

How do I get connected?

The modem pool supports asynchronous, Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP), and Point to Point Protocol (PPP). First, you must create a connection to the UMD modem pool.

Access numbers for the UMD modem pool:

Off-campus users: dial 728-7300
On-campus users: dial 7831

What UMDNet services can I access?

Most network services available to users on campus are also available to users from off campus, via either the UMD modem pool or a local ISP (modem, cable modem or DSL). Several tools are available to provide more secure off-site connections, including virtual private network (VPN) services, SSH terminal access and secure email services over the web.

Following is a brief listing of the services available to both types of users.

UMDNet Service Access via UMD Modem Pool
Email Unrestricted and secure using Mulberry, pine or IMP webmail.
Web access Unrestricted, including access to web sites restricted to University users (such as some of the reference sites from the library).
Telnet (QVT/Term) Unrestricted and secure access to the UMD central systems (bulldog, ub).
Novell Access to your personal data files; limited access to the server software.

See Novell Access from Off-campus for details

Samba Unrestricted and secure access to your personal files.
PeopleSoft No access
Appleshare Access to network laser printers and AppleShare file servers (including the Novell Office Server - see above) via your Chooser.
