MyWeb for Windows

MyWeb provides an easy way to create and update your personal web pages on the UMD web server (www.d.umn.edu/~jdoe0014). Setting up a Samba MyWeb directory eliminates the need to use an FTP program to transfer your files from your computer to your personal web directory. Once your Samba MyWeb directory is set up, you access the files just as you do files on your hard drive.

This section includes detailed instructions on how to set up and use your MyWeb space.

Off-campus users

You must be on the UMD network to connect to the Samba MyWeb. If you are off-campus, you can use Samba MyWeb as follows:

Windows XP / 2000

  1. Select START - Run. Type in \\samba\myweb\ and click OK.
    Run samba\myweb
  2. When prompted to login to Samba, enter your University Internet ID and password, then click OK.
    Run samba\myweb
  3. After a few seconds, you should see the directory listing for your MyWeb folder.

To map a permanent drive to your MyWeb folder:

  1. In the left column under "Other Places", click on the "samba" link. You should see a listing of folders and printers that starts with ".Aufs0". Scroll down to the folder labeled MyWeb. This is your personal folder on the central system server.

  2. RIGHT click on this folder and select "Map Network Drive" from the pull-down menu.
    Map MyWeb
  3. In the Map Network Drive window, for the Drive choose any available letter (such as W).
If you are on a dial-up connection, you probably want to clear the Reconnect at login box; if you are on-campus check this box to ensure that the resource is available each time you restart your computer. Click OK to map the drive.

  4. If you click on the My Computer icon on the desktop, you should see an icon for MyFiles. You can now save and access files here just as you would on your computer's hard drive.
