Using the Sunrays at UMD

Moving files to/from a PC and the SunRays

When you save files in the SunRay / Tarantella environment, they are automatically saved to a directory in your central system file space. You will have easy access to them the next time you login to a SunRay. The name of this directory is "WinDir"(short for Windows Directory.

You can get access to that same Windir directory from an ITSS Computer Lab PC as follows:

  1. Double click on the icon called "Your Windir Folder" near the top left corner of the screen on any PC in the ITSS Full Access labs:
    Your windir folder
  2. Enter your UMD username and password. Make sure you only use the first 8 characters of your password! Click "OK." A "Windir" window will appear.
    Windir login window
  3. In the "Windir" window, scroll down past the various printer icons and double click on a "windir" directory at or near the bottom of the list. Within this directory, click on the MY DOCUMENTS folder. You should see any files you saved on a SunRay here. You can also drag and drop files here and you'll see them on a SunRay the next time you open the My Documents folder.

You'll find this is already set up in all of the ITSS Full Access Computer Labs, but you can also set it up on your home PC. Just check out the Samba pages for more information.
