Configuring a computer for wireless access

There are 3 basic steps to connecting your computer to the UMD wireless network:

Please note that you must be located near a wireless access point for your wireless device to work. For a list of access points on campus, see Where can I access the wireless network?

Step 1: Install a wireless Ethernet adapter and drivers

Following are basic instructions for installing a wireless Ethernet adapter into a laptop. Refer to the operating manual that came with your computer and the instructions that came with your Ethernet adapter for details.

Many new computers come with built-in Ethernet adapters (wired and/or wireless). If you are unsure whether or not you have an Ethernet adapter, see Checking for an Ethernet Adapter.

To install a wireless Ethernet adapter and drivers:

Wireless ethernet card

  1. Turn the computer on.
  2. When the computer is ready, insert the wireless Ethernet card into one of the PC card slots in your laptop.
  3. Windows should display a message indicating it has found new hardware. If prompted for the drivers, insert the driver disk/CD that came with your Ethernet adapter.

Step 2: Configure the network protocol software

The network protocol provides your computer with an IP address and allows you to connect to the UMD network. Click on the link below for detailed information on how to configure the network settings for your operating system:

Step 3: Install the VPN client software

VPN software lets you make a secure connection to a University computer from UMD wireless network.

You should use VPN if you will be transmitting sensitive data, such as passwords, credit card information, social security numbers or any confidential information; OR, you need to access restricted resources at the University, such as Library journals or restricted systems.
