New Computer Setup
Getting a new computer? Let ITSS set it up for you. We'll install all standard UMD software (email, Office, etc.) and make sure it meets all current security and policy guidelines. If you wish, we'll also help you sync your PDA, set up network printing, install specialized software, and provide one-on-one assistance to get you up and running with your new gear.
Secure Computer Setup
The computer set up includes the following and is billed at one hour of staff time (see our current labor rate).
Update operating system
- Upgrade to latest Windows XP Professional
- Apply Windows service pack(s)
- Apply critical and recomeneded patches and updates
Apply security settings
- Apply OIT QuickStart Level 1 to:
- Activate the Windows XP firewall
- Disable Windows file and printer sharing
- Set up automatic Windows Updates for installation of patches
- Apply OIT QuickStart Level 2 (if computer stores or accesses private data)
- Create secure Windows XP workstation accounts.
- Set screen saver password.
- Set Control-Alt-Delete default Login.
- Disable MSN and Windows Messenger Service.
- Disable UNPNP.
- Configure for UMD WSUS service (auto update)
Configure for UMD network
- Set Ethernet Properties PPS/DNS
- Power Management
Install standard UMD software suite
- Microsoft Office 2003 and updates
- Mulberry (email)
- Thunderbird 1.5.0.10 (email)
- UMCal (calendar)
- Novell (file storage and printing)
- Firefox (web browser)
- Symantec Corporate (antivirus software) and current definition file
- Windows Defender (anti-spyware)
- Spybot (anti-spyware)
- Host Explorer (secure telnet}
- TrueCrypt (encryption software)
- Filezilla (secure FTP)
- CCleaner 1.39 (secure file deletion)
Additional services
In addition to the services provided for the Secure Computer Setup, ITSS staff can assist you with any of the following on request. Time is billed at our hourly rate (see our current labor rate).
- Deliver computer to office and set up at workstation.
- Configure printing (network or desktop).
- Set up syncing for hand-held devices.
- Assist owner with logging in to computer and changing workstation and/or Novell passwords.
- Provide one-on-one assistance with computer-related questions.
- Install and/or configure other non-standard software applications.
