Your Internet/Email Account
Getting an Account
How you request and pay for an account depends on your relationship with the University.
- Current students
- For currently registered students, Internet ID/email accounts are automatically generated within 2 working days after a student confirms for orientation or registers for classes at UMD. Students do not need to request an account.
- To receive your user name and password, you must initiate your account. You will need to provide your Social Security Number, UMD student ID number and birth date in the appropriate fields. Disclosure of your social security number is voluntary. If you do not have a social security number or do not wish to disclose it, you may activate your Internet account by visiting any of the student computer labs, where you will be required to verify your identity in person with a photo identification card.
- Summer e-only: Students who are not registered for any classes during the summer will have their account converted to a Summer E-only account. These accounts provide basic email and wireless access only.
- Graduate students
- Graduate students who are registered for classes keep their regular student account. Graduate students who are no longer taking classes can request a Thesis account, an Alumni account, or a one-semester extension to their student account. For details, see: Graduate Student Accounts
- Faculty and staff
- All full and part-time faculty and staff are eligible for a University Internet ID and email account. To request an account, see Application for Computing
- Retired faculty may keep their accounts with some limitations. For details, see: Retired Faculty and Staff Internet Account.
- Alumni
- Starting with the graduating class of spring 2003, students may keep their existing University account as an Email for Life account. This account is limited to email only and remains open as long as it is in use. For details, see: Email for Life for UMD Alumni.
- If you graduated before Spring 2003 or would like more than email-only access (modem pool, web site, etc.), you may apply for a Sponsored Internet account through the Alumni office. For details, see: Sponsored Internet Accounts for Alumni
- Others
- Visiting scholars and others with a long-term association with the University may be eligible for a Sponsored Internet account. For details, see: Sponsored Internet Accounts
for External Customers.
- University guests, visiting associates and conference participants may be eligible for short-term wireless access. For details, see: Sponsored and Short Term Wireless Network Access.
Account fees and rates
Student accounts are funded through a per-credit Basic Email/Internet Access fee each semester that is paid as part of a student's tuition.
Faculty and staff accounts are billed directly to a departmental CUFS number. Fees include a monthly email/central systems subscription fee, plus charges for CPU usage, disk storage and connect time. For details, see: ITSS Rates and Fees
Sponsored Internet, Alumni, and Commercial accounts are billed monthly directly to the user and are due on receipt (checks payable to ITSS). Fees include a monthly subscription fee plus charges for cpu usage, disk storage, and connect time to the modem pool and/or central systems. Additionally, there is a one-time setup fee.
