Sponsored Internet Accounts for Alumni

If you graduated before Spring 2003 or would like more than email-only access (modem pool, web site, etc.), you may apply for a Sponsored Internet account through the Alumni office. Sponsored Internet accounts provide access to many University services, including email, Internet access through the UMD modem pool, web space, and file storage. Alumni will not be able to access the UMD Library's electronic resources remotely. See Remote Access to UMD Library's Electronic Resources.

What is the cost?

There is a one time setup fee of $20 that is due with the application form. After that, you will be billed monthly, with payment due on receipt (checks payable to University of Minnesota). Your bill will include a monthly subscription fee, plus charges for your personal file storage, modem connect time, and central processor (CPU) minutes, as detailed below.

You can check your current file storage, modem connect time, and CPU usage at any time with the Central System Usage Report.

Description Fee
One time set up charge $20
Monthly subscription fee $2.92/month
File storage 1 cent per megabyte per day
Modem connect time $.50/hour
CPU minutes The first 8 CPU minutes per month are free;
additional minutes are charged $1.00 per minute.

Note: Fewer than 10 accounts per month exceed the
free 8 minutes (it takes only a few 100ths of a second
of CPU time to read several email messages).

How do I get a Sponsored Internet account?

Print and complete the Application for Computing for Alumni and Sponsored Internet Customers and return it to ITSS with the $20 setup fee (payable to University of Minnesota).

To have a copy of the application form mailed to you, contact Spring Billiar (sbilliar, MWAH 157, 726-8843).

What will my user name and password be?

You can keep the same user name you had as a student, but you must indicate this on the application form. You will receive written notification of your new password.
