Important note: Thunderbird version 3 offers many improvements over previous versions. If Thunderbird was downloaded or installed on your computer prior to December 10, 2009, please make sure to download and install version 3 before beginning setup. You can download a copy of Thunderbird for free from www.mozillamessaging.com
If you just downloaded and installed Thunderbird, the program should launch automatically once setup is complete. Otherwise, find Mozilla Thunderbird in your programs list and open it to begin.
The setup wizard will automatically start when you launch Thunderbird for the first time. If it does not, or if you want to set up a second account, in Thunderbird go to the File menu -> New -> Mail Account.
Fill in your information with your full name, your full e-mail address, and enter your password. Uncheck the Remember password box and click Continue.
Thunderbird will automatically talk to the UMD server and do the configuration for you. On the next screen, click Create Account and you're in business! Click on your Inbox to see your messages and begin sending and receiving e-mail.
If you are migrating from an older version of Thunderbird, you may see some tabs with information on what's new open up after setup is complete. Feel free to close these tabs and click on the inbox tab to view your messages.
If you don't automatically see all of your e-mail folders listed on the left-hand side, you may need to do one more thing.
Your folders should all appear in the left-hand pane in Thunderbird. You may have to click on and expand some folders to view their contents.
