Setting up Thunderbird 3 for UMD Email

1. Open Thunderbird

If you just downloaded and installed Thunderbird, the program should launch automatically once setup is complete. Otherwise, find Mozilla Thunderbird in your programs list and open it to begin.

2. Fill in your information in the Mail Account Setup Wizard

The setup wizard will automatically start when you launch Thunderbird for the first time. If it does not, or if you want to set up a second account, in Thunderbird go to the File menu -> New -> Mail Account.

Account Setup Wizard

Fill in your information with your full name, your full e-mail address, and enter your password. Uncheck the Remember password box and click Continue.

Thunderbird will automatically talk to the UMD server and do the configuration for you. On the next screen, click Create Account and you're in business! Click on your Inbox to see your messages and begin sending and receiving e-mail.

If you are migrating from an older version of Thunderbird, you may see some tabs with information on what's new open up after setup is complete. Feel free to close these tabs and click on the inbox tab to view your messages.

  2. Click on Server Settings in the list on the left.
  3. Click on the Advanced button near the right-hand side of the window
  4. Uncheck the top box labeled "Show only subscribed folders" and click OK
  5. Click OK to exit the Account Settings screen
  6. Restart Thunderbird by quitting the program completely and then opening it again
