Instant Message/Chat Support for Computer Labs
The Student Computing team of ITSS now offers online question and answer support for users of our Full Access computer labs via instant messaging programs. We hope this will be an efficient way for chat program users to contact us with any computer lab related issues they are having.
What is IM?
Instant Messaging (IM) is real-time chat over the internet. Users type short exchanges back and forth, and can optionally have "logging" turned on in order to save the transcripts.
I don't have a Messaging Client. How do I get started?
To use IM you need to have a username registered with one of the IM networks listed below. You also need an "instant message client", a program that allows you to IM with others. IM clients come in two forms: programs you download and install on your computer (good for your personal/home computer) or web-based clients, useful for public computers.
In the table below, pick the IM program you prefer and click the "Get a screen name" link. Select a unique screen name, then download their free software (this may be optional, most networks offer a web client if you do not wish to download software). After you fill out a form and choose a screen name, you can start using IM in 1-2 minutes with any of these services.

What type of questions can I ask?
IM is intended to offer assistance in using the ITSS Full Access computer labs and the resources in those rooms. We can answer questions about computer lab access, operating systems, software applications, printing and general technology use. As a general rule, a limit of 5-15 minutes will be placed on individual IM sessions (depending on the situation). For inquiries requiring more time or more in-depth attention the student lab consultants may ask that a session be continued by phone or in person.
Please feel free to e-mail the Computer Lab Managers with any comments or questions you may have about this service.
