ITSS works with an outside vendor to provide security systems in labs and classrooms where equipment costs are substantial and need to be protected. ITSS staff will be happy to negotiate installation and monitoring costs with the vendor on your behalf (and with Facilities Management when conduit is required). Installation costs depend upon the project, and monitoring is billed monthly by the vendor.
ITSS staff will supervise installation and provide 24 X 7 response when the vendor reports a problem. ITSS response can be billed on a per-incident basis, or it will be included in the cost of lab staffing and supervision if you elect this service (see below). If there are individuals in your unit who need access to the labs during off hours, ITSS staff will provide training on how to use the security systems. Excessive false alarms (more than three per semester) due to inappropriate security system use may be billed.
In addition to room security systems, ITSS can also provide physical security for desktop computers in labs. Each computer will be attached to the desk with a security cable. Cost of cabling and associated parts is $30 per computer. Installation costs are based on our hourly computer equipment maintenance and repair rates.
ITSS staff are willing to hire, supervise, and pay student laboratory consultants. Students are paid between $7 and $8 per hour, and the remaining part of the hourly rate for this service goes to pay for supervisory and payroll staff. Security system response is included in this service at no additional charge. ITSS can arrange check-in services to limit access to your lab to those students that you specify. Our experience has been that scheduling student workers, and providing sick-leave coverage, is easier when we draw from a large pool of workers. ITSS hires more than 80 students each semester and can easily hire additional students to serve your needs.
