Who has Full Lab Access?

If you are enrolled in a course that either meets in a computer lab, makes use of computer lab resources, or that makes extensive use of central system services, a $64.25 computer Lab Access fee was assessed on your fee statement (check the list of courses).

If you are not enrolled in a course that had the Lab Access fee assessed you may purchase lab access by paying the $64.25 fee at one of the Cashier's windows in the Darland Administration Building or at the UMD Computer Corner in Kirby Student Center. Users will need to enter their UMD username and password to access the computers in all Full Access computer labs. Assistance with this process can be found in the lab by the student lab consultants.

What about summer Lab Access?

To gain basic internet / email access for the entire summer (Pre-Session, Summer Session I, and Summer Session II) students who are not registered for summer courses will be required to pay a $30 fee. Students who are registered for summer courses will be assessed a per credit fee on their fee statement and will retain access for the entire summer. In either case, Full Lab Access may be purchased for an additional $64.25.

Can I use the labs during break weeks?

During break weeks lab access is free to all currently enrolled UMD students. Users may need to ask the lab consultant for a temporary username and password to authenticate to the computers each day.

Can I use the labs to finish up a class incomplete which requires access to specialized software?

Students whose course work requirements extend beyond the end of a semester they were officially enrolled in can extend their basic network and Full Lab Access into the next semester by paying a $90 fee. Also see the per Day and per Week Lab Access rules.

Former UMD students who want to use the Learning Plus Tutorial to prepare for the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) can purchase lab access for $64.25 per semester but they must contact the Achievement Center to obtain permission.

What if I only need to use the labs for one day?

UMD Students, participants in academic programs held at UMD, former UMD students who were enrolled the previous semester, and students who are currently enrolled on other campuses of the University of Minnesota can purchase one day lab access passes for $6 per day. Purchase the pass at the cashier's window in Darland, or at the Computer Corner store in Kirby and bring the pass with you to the lab.

What if I only need to use the labs for one week?

UMD Students, participants in academic programs held at UMD, former UMD students who were enrolled the previous semester, and students who are currently enrolled on other campuses of the University of Minnesota can purchase one week lab access passes for $20 per week. Purchase the pass at the cashier's window in Darland, or at the Computer Corner store in Kirby and bring the pass with you to the lab.

What are the rules of conduct in the labs?

Please refer to the Rules for Computer Lab use page for more details.

Do Faculty and TAs have lab access?

Faculty and TAs who teach a course that meets in one of the Full Access computer labs may use that lab without charge to test software features and to prepare for class lessons and exercises. When new software is installed (usually between semesters), the faculty members who will be using the software will be invited to the labs to test it.

Who can make lab reservations?

Courses (for credit):

Instructors can reserve designated teaching labs by contacting UMD Room Scheduling. If a course (for credit) requires three or more lab reservations during the semester, the students in that course are required to pay the Full Access fee. No fee is charged when a course (for credit) meets in a computer lab only once or twice per semester.

Other Groups:

Special arrangements can be made for other groups to use the labs during times when the labs are closed. This includes some evenings, weekends, and semester breaks. Special needs such as Facilities Management work in the labs or ITSS work on the network or computer system servers would have priority over scheduling groups. Please contact labmanager for more information.

Do Faculty have access to the Lab Servers?

Faculty can obtain accounts and folders to put up materials on the lab servers for their classes. Faculty do not have access to the software on the lab server from their office accounts (please contact labmanager for more information).

Will ITSS install software provided by departments?

Faculty members can request to have software which was purchased by their departments put up on the lab servers provided that:
  • their license agreement allows it
  • there is space available on the server
  • the software is compatible with our license metering software
  • the software is compatible with our other lab software configurations

In addition, you can request that ITSS helps you with software purchases with this
request form.

How does printing work in the Labs?

Printing in all labs follows the pricing scheme below:

  • 5 cents per 8.5 x 11 inch black and white page
  • 20 cents per 11 x 17 inch black and white page
  • $1.00 per 8.5 x 11 inch color page.
  • $2.50 per 11 x 17 inch color page.

To pay for printing, you can use your UCard. You can add value to your UCard at a machine in the Library Lobby, Lib119, Swenson Science Building, or next to the Kirby Information Desk. If you do not have a UCard, you can also purchase a reusable "guest" card from these machines. Once you have added value to your card, you can use the card reader and print station at each Lab printer to retrieve your printouts. Detailed instructions will be posted by each printer.

There are real dollar costs associated with each page printed (paper, toner, printer wear and tear, etc.). In the past, printing was subsidized by the Full Lab Access fee. Separating printing fees from lab fees distributes printing costs more fairly, eliminates excessive / wasteful printing, and allows access fees to be used for other computer related services such as longer lab hours, more access, more powerful hardware, new versions of software, etc.

What about manual feeds?

You can print on your own resume paper in Library 119 (only) at the designated printer. The paper must by 8.5 x 11 inches and meet the following specifications:

 Minimum weight:  18 lb
 Maximum weight:  45 lb

Manually feeding paper is problematic. Make sure you bring extra sheets, because you may make a mistake.

The use of double-sided print outs, transparencies, etc. may damage the printers. We do not allow any of these materials in the lab printers. Please use The UMD Print Shop in Kirby Plaza 125 (726-7114) for these specialized printing needs.

Can I get more disk space?

All registered students are given 50 megabytes of storage space on the mainframe computer. Space can be increased by purchasing $6 Computer Service Units (CSU) cards at the Computer Corner or the cashier's window in DAdB and bringing them to Kplz146 for processing. Each $6 card will increase disk space by 100 megabytes for the current semester.

How can I get a refund?

ITSS will process refunds during the first two weeks of the semester if the $64.25 fee was charged for a class and the student learns that Full Lab Access is not needed. Refunds will be processed throughout the semester for students who pay the fee more than once.

How can I get lab access as part of a UROP Grant?

Work done by students on UROP grants is not covered by the usual lab access fee. A research account must be set up and lab fee of $64.25 must be paid if the lab access is required for the research work. The UROP grant should cover these fees. Contact
labmanager for more information.
