What to ask about information technology when choosing a college or university.

| Q: What information about admission and financial aid is available online, and can necessary forms be submitted electronically? | A: All UMD admissions and financial aid information is available online. Undergraduate students can apply for admission and financial aid online. Further information can be found on the Office of Admissions and Office of Financial Aid web sites. The University of Minnesota is one of the first universities in the country to allow students to view and accept their financial aid awards online. |
| Q: Is the college catalogue, including important campus policies, available on the Web? | A: The entire college catalog, including past versions, is on the web at our Catalogs page. |
| Q: Can a student access her personal student information/data online? | A: Personal information including current transcript, payment status, class schedule, demographic information, etc. can be accessed online at the Registration website. |
| Q: Can a student find out his grades online or by phone at the end of a semester? | A: Grades are available at the Registration website and by phone at (218) 726-8088. |
| Q: Is registration, including dropping and adding courses, processed electronically (either online or via phone)? | A: All registration is done online at the Registration website. |
| Q: Can students pay bills, receive loans, make campus bookstore purchases using online procedures? | A: Students can calculate loans and find information about tuition on the Registration web page. Detailed information about financial aid is available at the Financial Aid web page. At present, students can view their accounts but cannot pay their bills using on-line procedures. Institutional-based loan programs such as Perkins, Direct Loans, University Trust Loans, and Primary Care Loans pass electronically to the student's account. Some other loans require a check to be deposited in the student's account via the Cashiers Office. Students can also find out which textbooks they will need for their classes and order textbooks online at the UMD Campus Books website. |
| Q: What campus and community services are covered by "smart cards" or "debit cards"? | A: The UCard works as a student ID, a banking card, a long distance calling card, and a debit card. The UCard provides access to services in the Library, Residence Hall Dining Center, and Recreational Sports. The debit card is used to pay for printing in the computer labs, copying in the Library, and parking. Further information is available at the UCard website. |
| Q: What student information does the campus provide routinely to parents? | A: In accordance with regents' policy on access to student records, information about a student generally may not be released to a third party without the student's permission. |
