Printing Policies
Pricing
UMD uses a pay-per-page printing system.
- 5 cents per 8.5 x 11 inch black and white page
- 20 cents per 11 x 17 inch black and white page
- $1.00 per 8.5 x 11 inch color page.
- $2.50 per 11 x 17 inch color page.
How to Pay
There are two ways to pay for printouts from ITSS printers.
-You will need to add value to your U Card at a machine in the Library
lobby, near the Kirby Student Center
Information Desk, or in the Swenson Science Building.
-If you do not have a U Card, you can also purchase a reusable "guest" card from the Library 119 and Kirby Student Center
machines. Once you have added value to your card, use the card reader
and print station at any lab printer to retrieve you printouts.
Detailed instructions are posted by each printer.
Why Charge for Printing?
There are real dollar costs associated with each page printed (paper,
toner, printer wear and tear, etc.). Separating printing fees from lab
fees distributes printing costs more fairly, eliminates excessive and
wasteful printing, and allows access fees to be used for other
computer-related services such as longer lab hours, more powerful
hardware, new types and versions of software, etc.
Configuring Your Computer to Print to the Lab Printers
Any Windows XP or Apple OSX computer can be configured to print to the UnipriNT (Pharos) printers in the ITSS labs. All you have to do is click on a few links on our UnipriNT setup page.
UNIX Printing
We often receive questions about printing to our computer lab printers via UNIX commands. Rather than needing to know or memorize the name of each individual printer, if you send your jobs to 'laptop' (no ' ' marks) your UNIX print jobs will be viewable on the print stations in all print areas. For more information on UNIX commands, including printing options, visit the Unix Commands web page.
