NetReg
NetReg: UMD's Desktop Network Registration System
NetReg is an automated network registration system that is used to register unknown computer hardware before granting full network access. The goal is to restrict network access to authorized users (authenticated via their Internet ID), without requiring them to login every time they use their computer.
Initially developed by Southwestern University, we have been using a modified version in the residence halls for the past three years with great success, and are now testing its use with the rest of the campus.
How NetReg works
Registering via NetReg is a simple process that must be completed annually or anytime your computer is offline for an extended period of time.
- When an unregistered computer is plugged into a NetReg jack, it is granted limited network access to the NetReg registration server only.
- Open a web browser (Firefox, Internet Explorer) and it is automatically redirected to the ITSS NetReg Registration web page.
- Verify that your computer is running a current version of Symantec Anti-virus software, then run the QuickStart Basic Level 1 program to set security on your computer.
- Enter your Internet ID and password when prompted, and press Enter. Computers that pass all security requirements are granted full network access; those that fail remain in the restricted network and are directed to a Security Alert web page that provides specific instructions and the resources needed to correct the problem on the computer. Once the security problem(s) has been corrected, the owner can register again.
Why use NetReg?
In the past, ITSS staff have manually registered all computers on our network. The benefits of having our customers register their computers include:
- No wait time for registering new computers or computer moves (customers can register anytime).
- We can easily track security settings on desktop computers on campus.
- We can monitor against known security vulnerabilities to provide a more secure network environment.
- We can quickly remove virus-infected computers from the network to minimize infections on other computers.
