NetReg

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why do I need to register my computer?
The goal of NetReg is to restrict network access to authorized users to increase overall network security. Additional benefits of NetReg include:
  • No wait time for registering new computers or computer moves (customers can register anytime).
  • We can easily track security settings on desktop computers on campus.
  • We can monitor against known security vulnerabilities to provide a more secure network environment.
  • We can quickly remove virus-infected computers from the network to minimize infections on other computers.
Q: Do I need to register every time I use the computer?
No. You should only need to register your computer once each year. You may need to re-register if your computer is off the network for an extended period (on vacation or leave) or if you move to a new office. You will need to re-register if you get a new computer. You do need to register every computer you use on the network (for example, a desktop and a laptop).
Q: How do I register my computer?
  • Turn the computer on. If you have the Novell client installed on your computer, select Workstation Only and login. (You will not have Novell access until you register.)
  • Open a web browser (Firefox, Mozilla). You should be automatically redirected to the NetReg registration web page at: https://netreg-camp.d.umn.edu/register.html.
  • Follow the onscreen directions for your operating system. Enter your Internet ID (email) user name and password, and select "Register".
    • Internet ID: Use all lowercase (for ex: carl9999); do not include "@d.umn.edu".
    • Password: Remember that your password is case-sensitive.
  • Restart your computer and log in as usual. You should have full network access (including access to Novell services).
For details see: Registering via NetReg
Q: When I try to access the NetReg registration web page, I get the error message "Page not found" or "Click here to register".
This may be a browser problem. See: Browser troubleshooting tips (Windows) or Browser troubleshooting tips (Mac)
Q: When I try to register my computer on NetReg, I get the Security Alert web page.
As part of the registration process, all computers are scanned for known security vulnerabilities. Computers that pass the scan are granted full network access; those that fail remain in the restricted network and are directed to a Security Alert web page with a message that specifies (by scan number) which problems must be corrected.
For details see: Security alerts
Q: I'm moving to a new office - do I need to register again?
If you move to a new office in the same building, you should not need to register your new connection. You should continue to have full network access. If you move to a new office in a different building, you may need to register your new connection.
For details see: New office and/or computer
Q: I'm changing computers - do I need to register again?
If you get a new computer, you will need to register it to get full network access. If you use multiple computers on the network (for example, a desktop and a laptop), you will need to register each computer.
For details see: New office and/or computer
Q: I registered and my connection is working, but I keep getting redirected to the NetReg registration web page.
You may need to clear your browser cache.
For details see: Browser troubleshooting tips (Windows)
See: Browser troubleshooting tips (Mac)
Q: I registered once and my connection was working - but now it quit.
You may need to re-register, or there may be other network issues. The first step is to determine your current IP address.
For details see: Verify your IP address
Q: When I run WINIPCFG or IPCONFIG, I get an IP address other than 131.212.x.x.
For a 10.5.x.x IP address, see: Getting a 10.5.x.x IP address.
For a 10.0.x.x IP address, see: 10.0 - Wireless.
For a "Media Disconnected" error, see: 0.0.0.0 - Media disconnected.
For a 169.x.x.x IP address, see: 169.x.x.x.
For a 192.x.x.x IP address, see: Anything else.
For the error message "An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket", see: Operation on something not a socket.
