Web browser troubleshooting tips (Macintosh)
Problem: When I try to access the NetReg registration page (or other secure https:// pages), I get the error message "Page not found."
Problem:I registered successfully, but keep getting redirected to the NetReg registration web page.
Solution: Try the following steps in the order listed. After completing each step, try to access the web page again.
Verify that you have a 10.x.x.x IP address
- Open the Sharing pane of System Preferences.
- Check the IP address listed. If it is not 10.5.x.x, refer to the IP address table for troubleshooting tips.
Try typing in the full name
Open your web browser, type in the following URL address, and press ENTER:
https://netreg-camp.d.umn.edu/register.html
Clear your browser history and cache.
Safari: Go to the "Safari" menu and choose Clear Cache" and/or Reset Safari.
Internet Explorer: Delete the Explorer folder and the MS Internet Cache folder
- Open your hard drive, and then open the System folder.
- Open the Preferences folder, and then drag the Explorer folder and the MS Internet Cache folder to your desktop.
- Launch Internet Explorer again. New Explorer and MS Internet Cache folders will be automatically created.
- To use your old favorites, open the Explorer folder on your desktop from step 2, and then drag the "favorites.html" file into the new Explorer folder (located in the Preferences folder).
- Once you're satisfied that your browser is working properly and your favorites have been saved (they appear in the favorites window in Explorer), feel free to throw away the Explorer and MS Internet Cache folders on your desktop as they may unnecessarily consume hard drive space.
Empty Internet Explorer's cache:
- Open Internet Explorer.
- On the Edit menu, click Preferences.
- In the Web Browser section, click Advanced.
- In the Cache section, click Empty Now.
- Click OK, close, and then restart Internet Explorer.
Try a different web browser
IE might not be on the OSX Dock, but will be in the Applications folder. If you're using Internet Explorer, try Safari or Firefox. You can get recent versions of other browsers here: UMD Software Download
Delete the Internet preferences file
- Open your hard drive, and then open the System folder.
- Open the Preferences folder, and then drag the Internet Preferences file to your desktop.
- Launch Internet Explorer again. A new Internet Preferences file will be automatically created.
- If you have modified your default Internet Config settings, you will need to reset them again.
Temporarily disable any firewalls
Follow the vendor's instructions to turn it off. After successfully registering, turn the firewall back on.
For older OS - reconfigure DNS
Macs not on OSX may have their DNS server hard-wired to 131.212.32.32, due to how we configured things in the far past. This isn't needed for OS8.6 or higher. To reconfigure:
- From the Apple menu, choose Control Panels -> TCP/IP.
- Delete the DNS entry.
- Close the window and save changes.
- Clear the browser caches.
