How NetReg works

To connect your computer to the UMD network over a NetReg connection, simply plug in, open web browser, and register using your University Internet ID.

  1. Turn the computer on.
NOTE: If you have the Novell client installed on your computer, select "Workstation Only" and login. (You will not have Novell access until you register.)
  2. Open a web browser (Firefox, Mozilla). You should be automatically redirected to the NetReg registration web page at: https://netreg-camp.d.umn.edu/register.html.
  3. Follow the onscreen directions for your operating system. You will be prompted to verify security settings on your computer. For Windows XP and 2000 computer, you will also prompted to run the QuickStart Security Wizard.
  4. When prompted, enter your University Internet ID (your email name) and password, and select "Register".
    • Internet ID: Use all lowercase (for ex: carl9999); do not include "@d.umn.edu".
    • Password: Remember that your password is case-sensitive.
  5. Restart your computer and log in as usual. You should have full network access (including access to Novell services).

What is the QuickStart Security Wizard?

Beginning March 1, the campus NetReg computer registration will include the QuickStart Security Wizard as part of the registration process for all Windows 2000 and XP computers. QuickStart will check for the following five items on a computer:

  1. Is Windows XP Firewall enabled?
  2. Is Windows Automatic Update enabled?
  3. Is file and printer sharing disabled?
  4. Is a current version of Symantec Anti-virus installed?
  5. Is the Symantec AV virus definition file current?

If a computer fails any of the checks, the problem(s) must be corrected before the user can continue with the registration. The first three items (Firewall, Automatic Updates, and File and Printer Sharing) can be quickly fixed by selecting the "Fix It" button that will be displayed. If the computer does not have a current version of Symantec AV or current definition files, these will need to be downloaded and installed before running QuickStart again. Once the computer passes all five checks, the user will be allowed to continue the registration process.
