Registering a Windows XP or 2000 computer

Completing the online registration

  1. Make sure your Ethernet cable is securely plugged into your computer and the NetReg jack on the wall. (For a current list of NetReg jacks, see: NetReg Authenticated Jacks.) Turn the computer on.

    If you have the Novell client installed on your computer, select Workstation Only and login. (You will not have Novell access until you register.)

  2. Open a web browser (Firefox or Mozilla is preferred). You should be automatically redirected to the NetReg registration web page, shown below.

    NOTE: If you do not see this web page, try the following:
  3. Select "Windows XP or 2000" from the list. The QuickStart Security Wizard page should be displayed as shown below.

  4. Follow the on screen instructions to download and run the QuickStart Security Wizard (qsbasic.exe).
  5. Check the QuickStart Basic Security Settings results (a sample is shown below).

    • If all checkpoints passed (all green bars), select "Next" to continue.
    • If one or more checkpoints failed (red bars), you must correct the problem(s) before you can complete your network registration. Refer to the following table for details.

      Checkpoint failed (red bar) Steps to take
      Windows XP Firewall Select the "Fix It" button; restart your computer and rerun QuickStart.
      Automatic Windows Updates Select the "Fix It" button; restart your computer and rerun QuickStart.
      File and Printer Sharing Select the "Fix It" button; restart your computer and rerun QuickStart.
      Symantec AV Download and install current version; restart your computer and rerun the QuickStart.
      Symantec AV definition files Download and install current definition files; restart your computer and rerun the QuickStart.
  6. When your computer has passed all five checkpoints (all green bars), select "Next" to continue.
  7. On the "Register your Computer" web page (shown below), enter your Internet ID (email) user name and password, and select "Register".

  8. You will get one of the following messages:

    Status Message Action
    . "Your computer has been successfully registered." Restart your computer and login as usual. You should have full network access at this time, including access to the Novell services.
    . "Invalid Login" or "Authentication Failed." Type your Internet ID (email) username and password again. Remember:
    • Internet ID: Use all lowercase (for ex: carl9999); do not include "@d.umn.edu".
    • Password: Remember that your password is case-sensitive.

    If this problem persists, contact the ITSS Help Desk (x8847) for assistance.

    . "Hardware xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx Already Registered. Please Reboot Your Computer." Power cycle your computer (select Shut Down, leave the power off for several minutes, then restart). Login as usual. You should have full network access at this time, including access to the Novell services.
    "Security Alert" A Security Alert indicates that there is a problem with your computer. Follow the instuctions on the screen to correct the problem, then register again.
