Class alias requests are ready

Date: 8/20/2004

Faculty members who would like email aliases (email lists) for their classes for the upcoming term can request them via our web page:

Class Email List Requests

(Or, go to the Technology Resources for Faculty and Staff page, and click on "Class email list requests" under the "Course Support" heading.)

Email aliases allow faculty to send email to all of the students in a class using one address. The address will be of the form spec1234-1-f2004 (interpreted as Spec 1234, section 1, Fall 2004).

For security reasons, only people with a UMD faculty or staff account can authenticate to the web page, and you must be on the UMD network to access the web form.

Class aliases are activated three times a day, with confirmation messages sent to the instructors at that time. Lists are updated as students add and drop the classes.

The FAQ's on the web page are a good source of information about how class aliases work. One of the often used features is one allows faculty to get a list of those on their class alias list any time during the term by going to the Modify screen on the class aliases Web page. The act of clicking on the "Submit" button on the modification screen, whether or not any changes were made, will trigger the system to send out an alias list to the owner and any other instructors. The lists are sent out when the regular updates are done.
