UMN Internet ID passwords to be tested

Date: 2/8/2005

University staff in OIT (Office of Information Technology) are testing passwords on all UMN Internet ID (aka X.500 or email) accounts to determine their strength and how recently they have been changed. Accounts that have weak or old passwords will be sent a letter explaining the problem and encouraging the user to update their password.

A sample of the letter to be sent:

Subject: 'Your UMN Internet ID'

Hello,

The password on your University of Minnesota Internet account: guru0011. has been tested and found to be unacceptable. Your password is considered weak because it is based on a dictionary word.

Additionally, your password has not been changed for an extended period of time.

It is highly recommended that you change your Internet password. The University tries to prevent automated attacks, but the best security is a strong password that is changed regularly.

To change your password:

You can reset your password by going to https://www.umn.edu/validate
- Log in using your current password.
- Press the 'Update Account' button
- Select 'Change your Internet Password'
- Enter your new password (twice to prevent typing errors)
- Press the 'Submit' button.

If you have any questions or need assistance, please call 1-HELP at (612) 301-4357.

Thank you for your cooperation.
