Automatically Backup Files with Shadow Copy

infotech.NEWS: November 2015

Shadow Copy service gives users the ability to work with past files on their own for a limited time.

Shadow Copy service is now available on Active Directory file storage. It is a supplement to our complete backup/recovery process and allows you to restore to previous versions without contacting ITSS support.

Logo: MicrosoftAlso known as Volume Snapshot Service, Shadow Copy is a technology included in Microsoft Windows that allows taking manual or automatic backup copies or snapshots of computer files or volumes, even when they are in use. The service is set to save one week worth of Shadow Copies – one week is the limitation on how far you can go back with this service.

Shadow Copy service is available to all UMD users who are operating Windows machines and access AD (Active Directory) file storage servers. Apple devices currently do not have the abilities to take advantage of the Shadow Copy services.

For details on how to use the service, please consult AD: Restoring Files with Shadow Copy.
