Wireless Networking for UMD Housing

ITSS has completed a two-and-a-half-year project to add wireless networking services to UMD residence halls and apartments. Although all Housing units have had a wired connection for each student for many years, we were hearing many requests for wireless network access to be added.

All UMD Housing units now have wireless except for Stadium Apartments. There are no plans to add wireless to Stadium. This project was funded by redeploying funds previously used to provide in-room telephones in Housing. Almost all students have cell phones, and usage of in-room phones was very low. There are still house phones available to be used in emergencies, and students who prefer an in-room phone are able to pay extra to have one installed. A survey of students living in Housing showed strong preference for wireless networking and very little interest in in-room phones.

Mobile Web Pilot

ITSS webmaster Andy Manteuffel and the Campus Web Committee have completed a pilot project to make part of the UMD web site more usable to mobile devices. Most centrally-managed web pages (those linked directly from the UMD home page) now provide a more readable display when viewed with a mobile device. We are seeking feedback from the campus community about this functionality before we expand this to additional pages. Please send comments to Linda Deneen (ldeneen).

Beware of Phishing Attempts, Scams, and Job Offers in Your Email

Don't Get HookedEmail phishing attempts, try to fool you into providing private information such as your Internet password, banking information, or other information that might lead to identity theft. Recently a new UMD student reported having responded to an email offering a job opportunity. Because it came in her UMD email, she thought it was an email from UMD, and she responded by providing some information and indicating an interest in this job. Unfortunately, the email was not from UMD, and it is hard to tell whether or not it was a legitimate business. Luckily, she did not provide any private financial information, so we hope all will be well. ITSS scans email before it is delivered and then tags suspicious email in the subject line with [phish?]. There is no need to call or email us when you see a message like this. Unless you have a good reason to believe it is legitimate, you should simply delete the message. Please know that we can't detect every phish message, so you should still remain vigilant. In gmail, you can also choose to tag the message as spam, using the icon that looks like a stop sign with an exclamation point inside.

Please know that no reputable business, including the University of Minnesota, will ask you to provide personal information via email. In particular, guard your passwords, bank numbers, social security numbers, and similar data, and do not provide it via email. You should also avoid clicking on a web link in a suspicious message.
