Active Directory File System Restructuring

ITSS will be working on a project this spring to replace our aging Active Directory file storage infrastructure. The current systems are already 5 years old and have reached the end of their effective support life.

This project will allow ITSS to stop paying support for our old Storage Area Network (SAN) infrastructure and a number of physical servers that will be retired. By virtualizing the servers, it will also lower the amount of staff time required to support the system as well as power and infrastructure costs.

Over the next 3 months, ITSS will be building new file servers on our VMWare (Virtual) infrastructure and migrating data off the old systems to the new ones. Most of this process will be transparent to the end users, especially if they are on computers that are bound to Active Directory. For Mac users and non-Active Directory computers that use our storage, there will be changes for connecting to the file shares that will be documented by ITSS.

ITSS will be in communications with campus IT staff as this project develops with more detail. If you have any questions or concerns about this project, please contact the ITSS TechCenter Help Desk (x8847) and we will be more than happy to answer them for you.
