In order to improve security, ITSS will be blocking access to an email server. Gmail users will not be affected.
Starting April 1st, UMD ITSS will be blocking access to the email server address 'smtp.d.umn.edu' from non University network addresses and campus nomad addresses. Nomad addresses are a group of addresses assigned to campus computers.
Most of us have been using Gmail for a long time and will not be affected by this.
Smtp.d.umn.edu is a local email server designed to receive incoming emails and deliver to our email routing system for further processing. Before Gmail, all email clients were connected to it to send out emails. By allowing unnecessary connections, we are imposing more security risks into our email system. Our final target is to downsize the server to only handle campus devices (such as fax machines and printers) and automatic systems messages.
If you have questions/comments on this, please send to email@example.com or call the ITSS TechCenter Help Desk (x8847).
