Virtual Private Network Protects Commercial Internet Users
ITSS has now installed a Virtual Private Network (VPN) service to protect and enhance services for UMD users of the commercial Internet accessing information on the UMD network. By connecting to our VPN before transmitting sensitive data, your data is encrypted before it traverses the commercial Internet.
We encourage those connecting to the UMD network through private Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to use this service. It makes your remotely-connected computer appear as though it is directly attached to the UMD network. Similarly, those taking laptops on the road and connecting via remote networks or ISPs should consider using this as well.
Please see Virtual Private Network (VPN) Service for information about what it does and how to use it.
Users who connect to UMD by dialing into the UMD modem pool will not need to use this service. Our own modem pool is already part of the UMD network.
Please try this out and send us feedback about how it works for you.
