Email has recently been adopted as the official notification system by the University of Minnesota Duluth. This has led to some recommended changes concerning email forwarding, which have resulted in the actions described below.
We are in the process of merging our email forwarding system with the central University of Minnesota system. Up to now, setting an email forwarding address in the central University database (under "Personal Information") affected email addressed to central University addresses only, e.g. firstname.lastname@example.org (without the d.), and did not apply to email with an @d.umn.edu in the address, or without an @ in the address. Local forwarding addresses were set on a local web page. In the future, a forwarding address set under "Personal Information" will apply to all University email.
Everyone who currently has a forwarding address set, in either place, has been informed of that via email and give the option of having their forward address removed, changed, or set the same in both systems.
In the process of modifying our email forwarding system we are also discouraging users from forwarding to email providers such as HotMail and Yahoo which reject email when users exceed their allowable mailbox size. Email in UMD mailboxes can be accessed on the Web by going to UMD's Web Mail Imap page which eliminates the need for email forwarding for most people.
Forwarding addresses can be set in the "Internet Options" section of your "Personal Information". There is a "View and Change Personal Information" link on the UMD Registration web page and an "Update Personal Information" link on the Human Resources home page.
