Tommy:

A lot of people are curious. They wonder - Blind people...using the computer? Come on! How does that work? Hey, it works pretty good.

Tommy:

This here is a 2009 MacBookPro. I think it's the 13 inch screen. It's the little one. Um. what do I need the big screen for? Anyway, theres an option on this machine that will actually read the screen to me. You can find it in system preferences. Just go to "Accessibility", and there it is. Its called VoiceOver.

VoiceOver:

System preferences. Accessibility Window. Tool Bar.

Tommy:

So lets say I want to send someone an email. Now, remember I'm in VoiceOver so it works a little bit differently. Alright, but well go to the Dock...

VoiceOver:

Dock. Finder.

Tommy:

And thats the Finder and then we go across to Mail. So on the way we have...

VoiceOver:

Launchpad. Mission Control. App Store. Dashboard. Mail.

Tommy:

And there's mail. So now I hit the space bar to open it.

VoiceOver:

At Finder Desktop. 865 rows added.

Tommy:

Alright. Let's compose a new piece of mail. So to do this well hit Command N.

VoiceOver:

Message window. To Edit Text.

Tommy:

Now it asks to whom I'm going to send it. So well send it to hello at

VoiceOver:

Hello At.

Tommy:

Blind Film Critic.

VoiceOver:

Blind Film Critic. Period. Com.

Tommy:

Now you hear it repeat what Im typing here too. So well tab across now to see

VoiceOver:

CC. Edit text.

Tommy:

We dont need to CC.

VoiceOver:

Subject. Edit text.

Tommy:

Our subject will be... What Fun... Exclamation.

VoiceOver:

Exclaim. Exclaim.

Tommy:

Now we'll tab across to where we can write our note.

VoiceOver:

Edit text. Hey, comma. Space. What fun. Space. We had today. H... Shooting Videos. Period. Space. You rock. Space. T.... E...

Tommy:

And now all we have to do is send it. We use Command and Shift at the same time. And then D. Okay, now lets keep that email address alright, no spammers... any of that kind of thing, alright? Please. between us Thank you.

[Music]

Tommy:

So the fun you can have now, that we showed you how to set this all up and everything. Go to your friend's Mac and just set it up for him while he's out of the room or whateve. And boy, wont they be surprised. (laughs)
