Novell Services
Novell Access from Off-Campus
Limited Novell services are available to UMD faculty and staff from off-campus. In general, you must use a University-owned (not personal) computer, you can access files saved to the server (the H: drive), and you can run some (but not all) of the software on the office server.
What you need
You will need the following to access limited Novell services from home:
- A Novell full-service account.
- The Novell client software installed and configured on your computer (Windows users only). ITSS will do this on request for University-owned computers; this service is not available on personally-owned computers.
- A connection to the network through the UMD modem pool. If you connect using a cable modem or DSL (such as Charter Communications or CP Internet), you must also install the Virtual Private Network (VPN) service to be able to access the Novell server.
- Any software needed to access the files (such as Microsoft Office or Dreamweaver). Users may need to purchase this software. Please note the following rules and limitations on installing software from the UMD server on a home computer:
- University software may only be installed on University-owned computers. This does include University laptop computers that are used in the office and at home, or University desktop computers that are used in the home exclusively for University work. It does not include personal computers that are owned by the individual and used for University work.
- University software is to be used by University faculty or staff only; it is not intended for use by other family members.
- Server software can not be installed over a modem connection (this is due to speed and bandwidth issues). Users who meet the above requirements and need server software installed on their University-owned computer will need to bring their computer in to ITSS to have the software installed.
- Software that will run on a home computer over a modem (or cable modem or DSL) connection is limited to the following for Windows users: Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash, Photoshop and Office 2000. Due to bandwidth and licensing issues, other Windows software currently available on the office server is not available from home.
Configuring your Novell client
If you already have the Novell client installed on a laptop computer you use on campus, you will need to make the following change to enable you to log in from off-campus:
- Right click on the red Novell N in the lower-right task bar, and select Netware Client Properties from the list.
- Select the Service Location tab.
- In the Directory Agent List field, type in: slp.d.umn.edu, click Add, then OK.
- Restart your computer, and start the VPN service.
Bypassing the Novell login at start up
When you turn your Windows 2000 or XP computer on at home, you will get a Novell login prompt. As you are not connected to the UMD network at this time, you will not be able to log in to the Novell server.
To bypass the Novell login, check the Workstation Only box and log in using your Windows 2000/XP workstation username and password (this may be different than your Novell username and pasword).

You will log in to Novell after you connect to the UMD network and/or start the VPN client.
Getting Connected
Following are detailed instructions on how to log in to the Novell server and access personal files from off-campus.
1 - Connect to the UMD network
Dial in to the UMD modem pool as you normally do, using your UMD email/Internet username and password.
OR
Connect to the network through your cable modem or ISP, then start the UMD Virtual Private Network service.
2 - Log in to the UMD_IS3 Office Server
- Right click on the red Novell N in the lower-right task bar, and select Netware Login from the list.
- At the Novell login prompt, type in your Novell username and password and click OK.
3 - Start the program and open a file
- Start the program you wish to use (for example, Microsoft Word or Dreamweaver).
- To open a file from the office server, look in the H: drive (or the drive you specified above). Depending on the file size and the speed of your network connection, it may take awhile to open the file.
4 - End the session
When you are done, you need to properly end the session or you may cause problems or lockup your machine:
- Disconnect or close any network applications.
- Right click on the red Novell N in the lower-right task bar, and select Netware Connections from the list.
- Select the tree icon on the list of connections, and click the Detach button. This logs you out of Novell.
- Right click on the VPN icon
in the lower-right task bar, and select Disconnect.
