Using your Novell account - Windows Computers
This section includes details on the following topics:
- Logging into Novell
- Logging in as "Workstation only"
- Changing your password
- Locked/disabled accounts
Logging into Novell
To access the Novell services from a Windows computer, you need:
- Novell account and password
- You will receive an email with your Novell account name and a temporary password. The temporary password will expire after 7 logins; you must change it during this grace period or your account will be locked. To request an account, complete the online Novell account request.
- Novell client software
- Required to connect to Novell servers. If you don't get a Novell login prompt when you turn your computer on, contact the ITSS TechCenter Help Desk at x8847.
- On the Novell Login window (shown below), enter your Novell user name and password and click OK to log in to Novell.

- At this time, you may also be prompted to enter a Windows user name and password. This is an account that is set up on your workstation. (If your Novell account and workstation account are synchronized, you will not see this second login window.)

If you do not know what this password is, you can try the following:
- If you recently changed your Novell password and did not change your Workstation password, try entering your old Novell password here (they are often synchronized on computers). If it works, you may want to update your Workstation password to match your Novell password (see Changing your WinXP/2000 Workstation password).
- If you recently tried to change your Workstation password, try entering your old Workstation password. (It may be that the password change was not made and you missed the error message indicating this.) To update your Workstation password, see Changing your WinXP/2000 Workstation password.
- If this computer belonged to another user, ask that person to login, then change the workstation password (see Changing your WinXP/2000 Workstation password).
- If you do not know the password and can not login to the workstation, contact the ITSS Help Desk (x8847). An ITSS staff member will need to make a site visit to create a temporary workstation password.
Logging in as "Workstation Only"
If you are working off campus and do not need access to your Novell files or printing, you may want to bypass the Novell login and log into your Windows workstation (computer) only.
- On the Novell Login window, check the Workstation Only box.
- Type in your Windows workstation user name and password (which may be different than your Novell user name and password).
- Click OK.
At this time, you will have access to your network applications (email, Internet) but not to Novell services (Novell printing, files stored on the H: drive of the server). To log in to the Novell server at a later time:
- RIGHT-click on the red "N" in the task bar (lower right corner).
- Select "Netware Login" from the menu.
- On the Novell Login window, type in your Novell user name and password and click OK to log in to Novell.

Changing your password
When you first receive your Novell account, you will be given a temporary password that expires in 7 days. After that, your Novell password will expire every 365 days. You will be notified at login beginning one week before the password expires. Select "Continue" to login and close the window. When all desktop programs have loaded, proceed to change your Novell password.
After the expiration date, you will have an additional 7 grace logins within which to change the password. If you do not change your password within the grace period, your account will be disabled. At this point, you will need to contact the ITSS TechCenter Help Desk (x8847) and a system administrator will work with you to reactivate your account.
Password requirements
When selecting a new Novell password, keep the following criteria in mind:
- Must be a minimum of 8 characters (Mac users are limited to 8 characters).
- Must include at least one upper and one lower case letter, and at least two numbers and/or symbols.
- Must be unique (the Novell security template tracks your last 8 Novell passwords).
Changing your Novell password (Win2000/XP):
- Log in to Novell and the workstation.
- Press the CTRL-ALT-DEL keys. On the "Netware Security" window, select the Change Password... button.

On the "Change Password" window, you will see a list of "Resources" (accounts) you can update. In addition to the Novell account (tree icon/Novell name), you will see a Workstation account (computer icon/computer name). If you use Samba services, you may also see Samba accounts (computer icon/windir or computer icon/www).

- Select (highlight) the Novell resource only, as shown below. (By default, all resources/accounts are selected.)
- Type in your current Novell password.
- Type in your new Novell password.
- Retype the new Novell password (to confirm).
- Click OK to change your Novell password.

If the update was successful, you will get a message indicating this. Click OK to close the window.
Changing your Windows workstation password:
To simplify your login process, you will probably want to update your WinXP/2000 workstation password at the same time you update your Novell password. To do this:
- Press the CTRL-ALT-DEL keys to open the "Netware Security" window, and select the Change Password... button.
- Select (highlight) the Workstation resource only, as shown below.
- Type in your current Workstation password.
- Type in your new Workstation password. Workstation password criteria:
- Must be a minimum of 8 characters.
- Must include at least one upper and one lower case letter, and at least two numbers and/or symbols.
- Must be unique (the workstation security template tracks your last 5 workstation passwords).
- Retype the new Workstation password (to confirm).
- Click OK to change your Workstation password.

If the update was successful, you will get a message indicating this. Click OK to close the window.
Locked Accounts
As a security mesure, Novell accounts are automatically disabled if:
- More than five login attempts are made with the incorrect password.
- The password has expired and the grace logins have been depleted. (Novell passwords expire every 365 days.)
In either case, you will need to contact the ITSS TechCenter Help Desk at x8847 to renable your Novell account access.
