Residence hall phone service

Quick dialing instructions

To make calls from your campus phone:

UMD (on-campus) calls:
Dial last 4 digits of number.
Local off-campus calls:
Dial 9 + 7 digit number.
Long distance with calling card:
Dial 9 + 0 + area code (if other than 218) + 7 digit number. Wait for a tone and enter your calling card number.
Long distance with 1-800 access number:
Dial 9 + 1 + 800 + access number + area code + 7 digit number.
Collect and third number long distance:
Dial 9 + 0 + area code (if other than 218) + 7 digit number.

Quick voice mail instructions

To log in to your campus voice mail:

  1. Lift handset, dial 6666
    (726-6666 from off-campus)
  2. Enter your mailbox number (last 4 digits of phone number) + #
  3. Enter your security code + #
  4. Messages will automatically play.
    6  Next message
    4  Previous message
    76  Delete message
    72  Time & date of message
    83  End session

All residence hall rooms and apartments include a telephone and unlimited on-campus and local Duluth-area calls at no extra cost. This provides students access to emergency and campus services as well as to faculty offices and other student rooms.

Residents may make long distance calls by using long distance calling cards, by calling collect (students are not allowed to accept collect calls), or by billing to a third number. Students may NOT bill calls, AOL accounts, Internet voice mail, or any other services to their UMD number. All charges incurred will be the responsibility of the student.

Repair assistance - x8573

ITSS provides maintenance for all campus telephone equipment, including phone sets, cabling and outlets.

For repairs, dial 8573 with the following information: your name, building, room number, phone number, and a brief description of the problem.

Voice mail

Voice mail is provided for each number on campus. A stutter dial tone indicates that you have a voice mail message waiting. Before using your campus voice mail, you must set up your voice mail box.

Setting up your voice mail box

Assign your voice mail security code

Your initial security code is 12 plus your mailbox number. Change your security code to a number only you and your roommates will know. Your security code may be 6 to 16 digits in length.

  1. The first time you log in, the system will prompt you to change your security code.
  2. Dial 84, enter your initial security code (12 plus your mailbox number), press #.
  3. Enter your new security code (6 - 16 digits), press #.
  4. Enter your new security code again, press #. Your security code has been changed. You will be returned to the main menu.
Record the name of your building and room number (mailbox verification)
  1. Once logged in, dial 829.
  2. Press 5 to record, wait for the tone, speak your building and room number, and press #.
  3. To delete, press 76 and try again.
  4. To return to the start of your mailbox, press 4.
    NOTE: Always delete the current recording before re-recording.
Record a personal greeting

You may record greetings for both external and internal callers. If you only want to record one greeting, record the external greeting and all callers will default to that greeting.

To record your greeting:

  1. Once logged in, dial 82.
  2. To record your external greeting, press 1.
  3. To record your internal greeting, press 2.
  4. Press 5 to record, wait for the tone, record your greeting, press # to stop recording.
  5. To verify greeting, press 2; to delete your greeting, press 76.
  6. To return to the start of your mailbox, press 4.
    NOTE: Always delete the current recording before re-recording

Using your voice mail

Following are basic instructions for using your campus voice mail.

Compose & send a message
  1. Lift handset and dial 75.
  2. Enter first address, then press #.
  3. Continue to enter addresses followed by #.
  4. When addresses complete, press # again.
  5. Press 5 to record, wait for tone, begin recording.
  6. Press # to end the recording. (To verify recording, press 2).
  7. To select an optional messaging tag, press 70 plus a number below:
    • 1 Urgent
    • 3 Economy
    • 4 Private
    • 5 Acknowledgment
    • 6 Time Delivery
    • 7 Attachment
  8. Press 79 to send the message.
Forward a message
  1. After listening to the message, press 73.
  2. Enter the mailbox number(s), followed by #.
  3. Press # again, when last mailbox entered.
  4. Press 5, to record an introduction.
  5. Press # to end recording.
  6. Press 79 to send the message.
Reply to a message
  1. o After hearing the message, press 71.
  2. o Press 5 to record your reply.
  3. o Press # to end recording in to your mailbox.
  4. o Press 79 to send the message.
